Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky’s (1882 – 1971) first international success was his 1910 ballet The Firebird. Based on a Russian legend, the Firebird’s powerful feathers bestow beauty and protection upon the earth. Prince Ivan Tsarevich must rescue his beloved princess from the evil sorcerer Kashchei, and relies upon the divine intervention of the Firebird to help him prevail over evil and marry the princess.
