Convergence is a musical exploration of independent events ultimately joining together to become something more significant. This show explores that concept on several levels simultaneously: musical themes and harmonies; winds versus percussion; sound versus silence; dynamic variations and undulations; and, variations of voicing and texture.

MUSIC SAMPLES

Mvt. 1: Nimrod is arranged from Edward Elgar’s work of the same name, a movement from his larger work Enigma Variations. It begins softly and builds gradually to a full ensemble arrival. The most famous example of musical convergence, its theme rises and falls gracefully, but it’s the sound of all things coming together as one.

Mvt. 2: Converge takes off with a lively mallet ostinato, after which a flowing melody layers in through various sections of the winds to converge in an arrival moment with full ensemble. A quick battery break disrupts the union of percussion and winds. The music becomes tense and dissonant, building urgently toward its resolution where winds and percussion reunite.

Mvt. 3: Approaching a Limit showcases thoughtful musicality and use of space. Low brass carry a smooth melody over a soft, pseudo-bell tone accompaniment before dropping out completely to reveal an ornamented, softer-still continuation by the mallet percussion. In allowing the music to breathe, the following entrance and arrival of the full ensemble together in a glorious chorale provides a cathartic release of the subtle tension building throughout the movement.

Mvt. 4: Merged brings the thematic and harmonic material of all the previous movements together in a magnificent moment of union and arrival.
