MUSIC SAMPLES

Mvt. 1: Awake and Sing proclaims the delight of waking up to a new day with sunbeams pouring through the window. (Perhaps the guard can "awake" on the ground and fill the field with vibrant yellows.) The crisp morning air is heard in opening piccolo and clarinet solos depicting the first rays of sunshine peeking over a mountaintop. (You can see how the visual imagery can provide hours of fun for a creative team planning session.) Think about utilizing visuals of kites, birds, blossoming flowers, trees...anything that conveys the essence of springtime rebirth and the glorious blossoming of summer.

Mvt. 2: Fallen Leaves (Londonderry Air) was inspired by the colors of an autumn day; reds, oranges and yellows, muted yet vibrant. In the musical introduction, you will hear the leaves fall to the ground. The Irish heritage of the music allows you, if you wish, to turn this into a geographic tribute to the history of Boston, playing off the mountaintops imagery suggested in Movement 1 and turning the show into a trip around the country as the seasons change. Imagine a walk through a park, taking in the beauty of the falling leaves as they if are colorful versions of the coming snowflakes.

Mvt. 3: Winter Clouds begins with the sky white with playful snowflakes dancing and darting all over. Think about a continual evolution out of the colors of the previous movement. The music does not give a sense of frozen isolation of winter; rather, it plays up the whimsical nature of the season that everyone loves. Think snow angels, snowballs, snowmen and sleigh rides; all things uplifting. If you are taking the geographic approach to the show, you can go anywhere in the country that has a deep winter, perhaps paying a tribute to the great Midwest.
